Blast-over :) Can it be counted at the tattooing style?
Before starting this section, the intention was to look at and structure the existing tattooing styles - nothing has changed, we continue. This style we defined as Punk style :) But actually this style is relatively new, it has become more popular since 2019. It is a brutal way of creating a tattoo on top of an already existing tattoo without completely covering it - blast-over ……
This style has its followers, its own thought and masters who work well in this genre of tattooing.
While the purpose of the cover-up is to completely conceal the old work, blast-over intention is opposite - to leave the old work visible under the new one. It is a communication with the existing drawings. A kind of symbolic act that emphasizes the intention to go beyond the past and embrace changes which today has brought. Assuming that blast-overs are a maximalist way that visually unites the disparate tattoos, bringing a new aesthetic attention and value to the wearer himself, who is willing to preserve history on its own skin. The idea of these tattoos is not to cover up, but on the contrary, it is a search for tattoos, old and new, to work together. Using this technique, old tattoos slightly overlap through the layers, but each of them works perfectly separately and organically as a whole.
Ideally, the old tattoo acts as a backdrop for the new one to stand out and become dominant. If both tattoos were equally intricate, You would achieve a comprehensible result and end up with a classic overlay of tattoos with a new drawing. Therefore, the blast-over technique works with thick, well-pigmented lines, because they help to effectively achieve figure-landing effect.
This technique allows you to revive old ink and take it to the next level. People and their desires tend to be different, perhaps unacceptable, that only a part remains visible of own old tattoo remains visible, and, on the contrary, You would like to keep some areas and colors, then this style Blast-over could be the right solution for You.
Blast-over works and drawing technique is a relatively new movement in the tattoo world. The basis is work on existing designs to give them a new meaning, using depictions - usually black - or negative areas that allow a glimpse into the old tattoos. Exist also a world of colors, which can just as well complement an existing drawing. Some people still love an old tattoo, but they lack the space for new artwork. Blast-over allows you to keep your old work while showcasing a brand-new tattoo.
Fine, if You find the old drawings meaningful and really like them, but often it covers a tattoo which was poorly made or is embarrassing behind quality and ideas. But it’s not a substitute - it is something else. Here the blast-over becomes aesthetic anti-heroes which speaks for itself.
A tattoo over a tattoo is a type of cover up tattoo, which does not completely cover the tattoo below, thus creating the appearance of layered ink. Usually tattooed over some old and faded tattoos, allowing the old visible tattoo to still interact and increase the layered effect. The final result depends on Your master and whims. Take note of that moment, that the negative ink areas You will not be able to cover and here a responsible decision should be made. In addition, there is another critical point. Tattooing on already tattooed skin is a very different experience, from tattooing on clean skin. In some cases, repeated tattoos may be more prone to skin damage.
P.S.
Here it can't be relied only on aesthetics. Blast-over should be accepted as a protest and dialogue with oneself. It can become a surprisingly good explosion - beauty on your existing works and vice versa. It doesn't hide your past - it leaves it out for all to see. Looking at yourself, You will be able to ponder on "then" and "now". In essence old ink drafts will remind us that the things that we like, the people we love and the spaces we live in can change. Your body is also changeable, the human hormone of happiness is balance in everything :)
